the Fitness Award, the ZONE fitness award
Article Image We interviewed an amazing athlete named Maliek Valentine that received the Fitness Award, the ZONE fitness award, for his determination during the 2018 T&F season.

The FITNESS AWARDS, the ZONE fitness award that was awarded to an athlete who overcame personal challenges and injury through the athletics season, and could MEDAL at the Western Province Championship. At the start of the Track and Field season, Maliek, who have been training hard, was admitted at hospital and had to undergo a surgery, and had a scare of cancer as well. However not even this challenge changed his mind from doing athletics. His love of the sport made him return back to the track after recovery. As we interviewed him, we learned that Malieks’ passion towards this sport, his loyalty with his training has helped him overcome many challenges.



Interviewer: When did you start with athletics?

Maliek: I started athletics in 2011



Interviewer: Why do you like to run?

Maliek: I grew up with liking track and field.



Interviewer: What motivates you?

Maliek: I am motivated when I see what other athletes could achieve subsequently I would also want to reach that heights. My family motivates me a lot



Interviewer: Where do you see yourself in 5 years (athletics)?

Maliek: In 5 years’ time I see myself on a global stage doing wat I love doing which is athletics.



Interviewer: What are you currently doing (grade)?

Maliek: I completed Grade 12 in 2017.



Interviewer: What are your hopes and dreams?

Maliek: My hopes and dreams are to be selected for the team to compete at Nationals and the Olympic games. To represent my country is my dream.



Interviewer: What was your greatest achievement thus far?

Maliek: My greatest achievement was medalling at the Western Province Championship.



Interviewer: Do you have a ritual before your event, what is it?

Maliek: I visualise my race. I picture how I would run my race, then once my mind is focussed then I’m ready for my race.



Interviewer: How do you deal with defeat?

Maliek: I deal with defeat like anyone else; I feel bad that I didn’t win but I know that I have to work harder and come back even better and stronger.



Interviewer: What do you like to eat the morning of your competition?

Maliek: Normally I don’t eat before a competition but when I do it’s an energy bar.



Interviewer: What do you like to eat after your competition?

Maliek: After competition I normally eat chicken burgers.



Interviewer: What advice would you give yourself for the next T&F season?

Maliek: The advice I would give myself is to keep working hard, because with hard work you will see results.



Interviewer: Quote you live by?

Maliek: The quote I live by is that success does not come easy but with hard work it will show.



Interviewer: How did you feel being awarded THE ZONE FITNESS AWARD?

Maliek: (smiling) being awarded the fitness award was a huge honour



Interviewer: What does this award mean to you?

Maliek: The award means a lot to me because it showed me that my hard work payed off.
