ULTRA ATHLETICS AWARDS EVENING
As we emerged ourselves with getting to know Tammy better we learned that she is no ordinary woman. She is indeed a woman of character that has also won the ATHLETE OF THE YEAR award. This specific award, the COMPUDATA ATHLETES CHOICE TROPHY is whereby the awardee was voted for by all athletes who participated, based on the following criteria: camaraderie, unity, friendliness, funniest, listens to their coach.
Interviewer: When did you start with athletics?
Tammy: Tricky question. I started running in primary school. Only took running serious in 2016 when I joined Ultra Athletics Club.
Interviewer: Why do you like to run?
Tammy: (smiley face) whether I like or disliked running is debatable. There's this constant battle between my mental and physical ability that I have with myself (more mental). Whether it's me running those longer distance or doing those gruelling workouts, the sense of accomplishments I get once I complete it drives me to keep pushing (making those small victories 💪). There's a hunger in me that wants more, and wants to better myself as well as to improve my running times.
Interviewer: What motivates you?
Tammy: What motivates me is to keep pushing and breaking those personal limits/ Barriers:
- The “want” to run better times
- The “want” to become better, stronger and faster.
Interviewer: Where do you see yourself in 5 years (athletics)?
Tammy: God willing I hope to compete at National and International level.
Interviewer: What are you currently doing (work):
Tammy: I'm working for a sporting company, where I work with the foundation phase teaching six sporting codes.
Interviewer: What are your hopes and dreams?
Tammy: I hope to make the WPA team and compete at National and International competition (Representing my country)
Interviewer: What was your greatest achievement thus far?
Tammy: Medalling at the Western Province Senior Championship, in both my events.
Interviewer: Do you have a ritual before your event, what is it?
Tammy: Yes, have a tendency to leave 30/40 minutes or maybe earlier to the warm up area, reason being is to woooshaaa. And just before a race, I pray.
Interviewer: How do you deal with defeat?
Tammy: To me it’s not that much about winning even though you get a great sense of accomplishment when you do. In the end it is about my time, if I reached it or not. If not I'll have to come back and do better. It is what it is, you win some or your lose some. It doesn't matter, regardless, winning or losing, it’s about my time. At the end of the day, if I didn't reach my set goal or ran a really unspeakable time, I take it as something I can learn from, and come back stronger.
Interviewer: What do you like to eat the morning of your competition?
Tammy: I always have cereal, 3 Weetbix with milk, and maybe banana.
Interviewer: What do you like to eat after your competition?
Tammy: Usually something I shouldn't have, takeaways - Tikka Tikka (smiling)
Interviewer: What advice would you give yourself for the next T&F season?
Tammy: Go out there and do what you have to do, don't hold back, and have fun.
Interviewer: Quote you live by?
Tammy: No pain, no gain.
What you put in you get out, so always give 110%.
What the mind can perceive, the body can achieve.
Interviewer: How did you feel being awarded MOST IMPROVED ATHLETE OF THE YEAR and the ATHLETES CHOICE AWARD?
Tammy: I was overwhelmed because I didn't expect any awards.
Interviewer: What does these awards mean to you?
Tammy: Means I need to keep doing what I've been doing thus far. I need to work harder than I've work during the previous season. It has proven that my hard work is paying off and has inspired me to work harder.
