Best Female Athlete of the Year, the COMPUDATA trophy

The Best Female Athlete of the Year, the COMPUDATA trophy that was presented and awarded to an athlete for outstanding performances while participating throughout the athletics season. Ameerah have come a long way as being a consistent athlete and always improving her PB’s by working really hard and determined to achieve. She consequently QUALIFIED according to the WPA standards and was SELECTED for both the JUNIOR and SENIOR National Teams. This made her a strong contender to be awarded this award. With this interview we aim to learn a little more about Ameerah, and see the world through her eyes.

Interviewer: When did you start with athletics?

Ameerah: I started with athletics at the age of 6 with the 60m and 80m sprints.

Interviewer: Why do you like to run?

Ameerah: I like to run not just to finish across the line first, but also the trip along the way; it makes me feel free and I've got energy to burn. To me, if I should stop running it would hurt me so much more than a blister or a broken toenail. Walking takes too long and I have things I need to get done (smiling) - to get a new personal best and to be proud of it.

Interviewer: What motivates you?

Ameerah: The look in my cats eyes when I didn’t do my best (laughing). No actually what motivates me is my hunger to achieve more. Most probably the end result of each event so that I can improve every time.

Interviewer: Where do you see yourself in 5 years (athletics)?

Ameerah: In five years’ time it will be around the Olympics time. God willing it would be great to qualify for the Olympics. I picture myself being centre staged in one of the most fantastically, beautiful tracks in the world. With massive crowds cheering at the Olympics/Diamond league/World championship for me as I walk up to the podium to receive my medal.

Interviewer: What are you currently doing (grade)?

Ameerah: I am currently in Grade 12.

Interviewer: What are your hopes and dreams?

Ameerah: I don't have dreams, I only have goals; it is simple yet true. I would like to firstly surpass my personal best for each event every time then only to reach for the important positions WHEN IT MATTERS.

Interviewer: What was your greatest achievement thus far?

Ameerah: I actually have a few. In 2015 I broke the Western Province record for GU16 pentathlon. In 2016 I broke the record three (3) times. My great achievement was jumping a SASA qualification at Western Cape Championship.

I was very honoured to qualify for the 3rd year in a row this year 2018 to represent Western Province at the SENIOR South African National Championship in Pretoria. Making the team three years in a row have status recognition benefits acclaimed to it. My great achievement also was to qualify and be selected to represent Western Province for the 2nd year in a row at the JUNIOR South African National Championship which was in April 2018. At the Junior South African National Championship I participated in the 4x400m event and we broke the Western Province record as well. However to top it all, was me being crowned the Miss Ultra Athletics Queen which was a superb achievement this year.

Interviewer: Do you have a ritual before your event, what is it?

Ameerah: I often remember quotes as I warm up; inspiring quotes and even song lyrics that zones me out of my surroundings and into "my world" where anything is possible. That livens up my mood before any event that I participate in.

Interviewer: How do you deal with defeat?

Ameerah: Whatever happens happens. There is always someone bigger and stronger out there. There is no use in getting depress. I just need to work harder. Once the loss is over I simply move on and continue to train harder and improve.

Interviewer: What do you like to eat the morning of your competition?

Ameerah: My usual breakfast; which is porridge such as weatbix, muesli with yoghurt or tasty wheat and/or coffee.

Interviewer: What do you like to eat after your competition?

Ameerah: After competition I just want to eat food, whether it be chicken or steak, but something to help with recovery and replenishment.

Interviewer: What advice would you give yourself for the next T&F season?

Ameerah: Stop stressing, who still stress? (Laughing). I would also tell myself to look forward to the next year, because it will be quite interesting and enjoyable. Try to achieve better personal bests in all the events that you participate in. As per usual there will be a hand full of new obstacles and challenges that awaits however be proud to conquer them with your head held high.

Interviewer: Quote you live by?

Ameerah: The quote I live by is that my biggest competitor is the one staring straight at me through the mirror. I don't sparkle, I shine.

Interviewer: How did you feel being awarded THE BEST FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD?

Ameerah: When I received best female athlete of the year award I was ecstatically happy. We have such amazing females in the club and they are all deserving. I felt like (exclaiming) I HAVE THE POWERRRR... "sHe-man" 😎. It felt great, it was a huge success added to my check list. It gave me the determination to once again SMASH through those unexpected obstacles and challenges.
